Wonderkid Paul Pogba’s future seems to be in doubt after recently refusing to sign a new contract with Manchester United.

The young French midfielder will be out of contract in the summer and would be free to discuss terms with any clubs. According to reports from Goal.com, Inter & AC Milan has both enquired about the lanky midfielder and could be heading to Italy.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson is confident they could settle Pogba’s contract dispute and insisted that his future lies in the Theatre Of Dreams. The manager was quoted saying, “It’s the decision the player has to take himself, no matter who he is, about where they think their best future will be. He just needs to look round about him to realise that. But if he wants to go, there is nothing we can do about it.”

Paul Pogba joined the Red Devils in 2009 amidst a bit of controversy when United were accused of poaching the player from French league club, Le Havre.

Match Preview

Form Guide

United are unbeaten all season and have won every Barclays Premier League game at Old Trafford since being held by West Brom 12 months ago. Only Fulham have stopped City winning in the league this season and even the Londoners had to come back from 2-0 down to earn a point. Blackburn (4-0) and Aston Villa (4-1) were ruthlessly dismissed in the last two domestic outings while Sergio Aguero’s late winner against Villarreal means confidence is sky-high for the Blues. City lead the table by two points after the Reds’ hard-fought draw at Liverpool.

Ins and Outs

Sir Alex is set to be without Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson and Rafael but Fabio is fit despite picking up another knock in Bucharest. David De Gea will return in goal in place of Anders Lindegaard with Rio Ferdinand available again to probably partner Nemanja Vidic after being rested for the Otelul Galati win. Nigel De Jong and Samir Nasri need to prove their fitness for City but Aguero looks primed to start after coming off the bench to good effect on Tuesday. Adam Johnson was withdrawn in the first half but the substitution was purely tactical.

Last Meeting

City wanted to send out a message at Wembley in the Community Shield and first-half goals by Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko did just that in the opening 45 minutes. Revved up for the second period, United hit back with Chris Smalling heading home and Nani finishing off a beautiful move to make it 2-2. In injury time, the champions broke and Nani kept his cool to beat Joe Hart for a thrilling winner.

Top Man

There are so many threats within the City squad but Aguero has quickly settled into life in England and has taken over the mantle of fellow Argentinian Carlos Tevez as the Blues’ main man. The last-gasp winner in midweek proved he is fit again for Sunday and he’s had little trouble translating his Atletico Madrid form to Manchester. Nasri and the classy David Silva must also be watched closely but Aguero is perhaps the star the defence must fear most.

Quote/unquote

“We don’t have any point to prove. We’ve shown our quality throughout the season. We don’t need a game against United to show how good we are. But it’s two of the best teams in England going up against each other and I expect it to be a great game” – Nigel De Jong.

Any sub-plots?

Every Manchester derby seems to be billed as the ‘biggest-ever’ in the press and there’s no doubt City are going to fight hard for the title. The FA Cup semi-final defeat last term was reckoned to be a watershed moment in a changing of the guard in the city by some but the Community Shield showed United will only relish the challenge. Late goals are the Reds’ forte in these games and, if it’s level going into stoppage time, expect some nervous faces in the away end.

Rivals Watch

Chelsea make the short trip across the capital to QPR after the final whistle at Old Trafford. Fourth-placed Newcastle entertain Wigan on Saturday with Liverpool meeting Norwich.

Whistle Blower

Mark Clattenburg has been assigned with refereeing duties – the Co Durham whistler took charge of the 4-0 Carling Cup defeat at West Ham 11 months ago but United’s record was generally excellent with him officiating last term. The two clubs are riding high in the Fair Play table so Clattenburg will hopefully not be too busy with his cards and he already has experience of handling a Manchester derby back in 2007.

The Red Devils are thought to be weighing up a possible cut-price bid for the controversial ex-Manchester City man, who has only one year left on his contract at St James’ Park

Manchester United are believed to be considering making a move for Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton.

The 28-year-old has only one year left on his contract on Tyneside, and Magpies manager Alan Pardew has already confirmed that the former Manchester City man has not been offered a new deal.

Speculation has since been rife about the future of the former Eastlands man, and now The Sunday Times reports that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering making a cut-price move for the midfielder.

It is believed that a bid as low as £2 (€2.3) million would be enough to secure Barton’s signature, despite Pardew having previously maintained that the midfielder could remain at St James’ Park.

The 30-year-old reiterates his belief that United offer his French colleague the best opportunity of silverware and claims a move to rivals City would be money motivated

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has once again urged Arsenal’s Samir Nasri to join him at Old Trafford, saying only United can offer the Gunners star the trophies to match his talent.

Nasri has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer after refusing to sign an extension to his current deal, which has one year left to run.

It is currently unclear whether Arsenal would rather sell their prized asset for a reasonable fee this summer or allow him to leave for free in 12 months’ time, but United and Manchester City represent the likeliest destinations for the 24-year-old should the Gunners elect to cash in now.

Evra has urged Nasri to move to Old Trafford before and, with his France team-mate thought to be closer to making a firm decision on his future, the 30-year-old reiterated his stance.

“I’ve talked a lot with him in the holidays and told him how great it is to play for Manchester United and how important it would be for him to become one of the biggest players in the world,” Evra told reporters.

“I remember I made that little joke saying that he’s a prince now but if he wants to be the king then he has to join Man United.

“But that’s the reality – and I’ve told him that. I said, ‘If you want to win trophies, you have to come here’.

“In five years I’ve won 12 trophies and I don’t know if I’d have won more than that with another club. So I just told him the truth.

“I don’t know how negotiations are at the moment but he has a lot of clubs interested in him and he has to think.

“I just told him how good it would be for him coming here. He will have a nice welcome and I can help as well because I’m French.

“We’ve spoken a lot in the summer and also when we met up for friendly games with France at the end of the season. It was looking interesting but I don’t know, we’ll have to see.”

However, United’s bitter local rivals City are also firmly in the race to sign Nasri, and their considerable financial resources mean they may be willing to match Arsenal’s valuation of the player, thought to be at least £25 million.

But Evra believes that to turn down the chance to win trophies at Old Trafford in favour of a move to City would be absurd, and hinted any such decision would indicate a preference for money over glory on Nasri’s part.

“If he goes to City it’s his choice,” he added. “But I know, as a player, if I have Manchester United and Manchester City, I’d go straight away for United.

“It can be for the money. But I’d prefer to go for the glory. He said it’s a privilege a club like United want him but he has to think about his future and talk with his agent.”

Red Devils boss denies having said anything concerning a potential move for the Dutchman, and praises Tom Cleverley and David De Gea after a friendly victory over Barcelona

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has denied that he delivered an ultimatum to Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

The Italian outfit were waiting for a formal offer from the Red Devils for the Netherlands international, with a view to pursuing their interest in wantaway Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez, Goal.com had exclusively revealed.

The Serie A club’s chief executive Ernesto Paolillo then hinted that the Dutchman could be sold, for the right price.

It was subsequently suggested that United may have put forward an offer to the midfielder.

“If he wants to come he must accept our contract offer,” Sir Alex is quoted by The Mail on Sunday as saying.

“If not, we have other options in mind. We’re done talking.”

However, the veteran boss has denied having made such remarks, and insists that there has been no progress on the Sneijder situation.

“Absolute nonsense,” he said. “I have never discussed him. There is nothing new.”

The Red Devils have, though, been reportedly on the lookout for a replacement to fill the void left by midfielder Paul Scholes, who hung up his boots at the end of last season.

Now the 69-year-old manager has hinted that youngster Tom Cleverley could potentially be a long-term successor to Scholes, expressing satisfaction over the 21-year-old’s performance during the 2-1 friendly victory over Barcelona in Washington DC.

“It is an area we have to find a solution for,” said Sir Alex.

“That is why we played Tom Cleverley today. Physically he is not the strongest but he is wiry and has a great idea of the game.

“He is a good footballer and was our best player today.

“His discipline was terrific. He is a quick passer of the ball. He has good eyes.

“It was a big night for him. He is a big, strong possibility for us to start the season.”

The Red Devils’ boss also maintained that he had made the right decision by signing young goalkeeper David De Gea as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar – who has retired from professional football.

“Replacing Edwin van der Sar is very difficult,” said the Scot. “He was a great goalkeeper.

“But the benefit we have with De Gea is that he is only 20.

“The qualities that stood out for us are his great composure and use of the ball.

“He is quick and agile, which is something we banked on.

“When we assessed him I thought he was the right goalkeeper to take.”

Sir Alex also revealed that striker Javier Hernandez has been cleared to fly back to England, having previously suffered a concussion in training after returning from international duty to join his club-mates on the pre-season tour of the USA.

“Javier is coming back with us,” the manager said.

“He is fine. He won’t play for a couple of weeks but that would have been the case anyway.

“He was always going to need a break until he got his fitness back.

“He will do some training, then we will have him back in three to four weeks.”

Chief executive reveals that United are interested in filling one more position in the squad, with two or three players on their wishlist.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed that the club are looking to sign one more player this summer.

United have already strengthened heavily since winning the Premier League in May, spending around £50 million on David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young, and speculation has been rife that the Old Trafford club are interested in both Inter’s Wesley Sneijder and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri.

And Gill stated that United are still interested in signing one more player, though nothing is on the horizon for the Premier League champions.

“Yeah, we knew that [it would be busy],” Gill told MUTV. “Edwin [van der Sar] made it known that last season would be his last so we had planned for a new goalkeeper well in advance.

“With the others [Jones and Young], the opportunities came along and we were comfortable with that. So we’ve made three signings.

“We’re looking at one more player to bring in. Nothing’s happening – nothing imminent – on that at the moment, but we’ll see what happens when we get home [from the tour of America].

“There’ll be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops. But I’m not working on anything at the moment, in that respect.”

Gill added that while nothing is happening at the moment, the club could sign someone soon, but only if that player is a world-class acquisition.

“We’ve been looking at a particular position and two or three players in that position, but nothing’s imminent at the moment,” he said.

“The important thing to understand, and Alex has made it clear, is that we need someone who’s going to improve the quality of the squad.

“We’ve got a great squad and to get into that squad you need to be a world-class player. There’s no point, if you can’t get the players you want, in buying someone for the sake of buying someone.

“But you never know – there’s often movement in August. I’m not sitting here saying I’m working on anything because I’m not, but that situation could change quickly when we get back to Carrington [the club's training ground].”

Honduran claims Sir Alex tried to sign him in the winter window, and despite Patrice Evra penning a new contract he expects the Red Devils to try buy him again this summer.

“Every day I speak to my agent and he asks me how I am. I’m also waiting to see how my work will go with Celtic,” Izaguirre told Honduran newspaper El Heraldo.

“I don’t talk about that [speculation surrounding possible moves to other clubs]. The move to Celtic happened and I kept quiet. If I have to move then I will welcome it and I will be grateful to God, and I will take advantage.

“I don’t know [of any interest from other clubs], but the Manchester United thing is true. [United boss Sir Alex] Ferguson asked about me and spoke to my team to see what my situation was, but at that time Patrice Evra hadn’t signed [a new contract], but then he renewed and there was nothing more.

“Manchester United looked for me but Celtic told them no because they wanted me for that season, but they said that they could speak in July, so now we’ll see what happens with me. If not I’ll stay at the club.

“I’m happy in Scotland and my agent is the one who is working on that [possible transfers] because I want to fulfil my contract until the end with Celtic, if nothing else comes up.

“I came here with the dream of triumphing in Scotland and I’m doing that. That’s the important thing for me at the moment.”

Despite interest from the Red Devils Izaguirre hopes to be ready to take part in Celtic’s pre-season training.

“I’m still recovering from the muscle problem I’m suffering and on July 1, I will start running again and I hope to take part in the pre-season in Glasgow without any problems.

“Next week I have to be in Glasgow working with my team and I would like to rest for a few days and spend these last days I have left with my family in Honduras.”
