Paul Scholes opened the scoring on his league debut to help Manchester United pile on the pressure on league leaders Manchester City.
United should have taken the lead when Wayne Rooney stepped up to take a penalty kick, but was denied by Bolton’s keeper, Bogdan, superbly with a crucial save.
However right before the stroke of half time, Wayne Rooney turned provider as he squared a cross to Paul Scholes who slotted it home to make it 1-0. United should have scored more as they dominated the first half, but a resolute Bolton’s defence kept United at bay.
United doubled the lead through Danny Welbeck, who was released by Wayne Rooney, with a cool finish, but had to be substituted after he was tackled by the Bolton defender.
Michael Carrick then completed the route in the 83rd minute after he cooly passed the ball into the net from outside the penalty box to make it a final score of 3-0 to the home team.
With a tough fixture at the Emirates Stadium next week, United will hope to capitalise on Arsenal’s poor form to snatch top spot of the league from their city rivals.
