For the first time in over 57 years, Manchester City has finally beaten Manchester United in Old Trafford in the Premier League. The champions was thumped 1-6 in the Theatre of Dreams after Mario Balotelli opened the scoring midway through the first half & a sending of for Jonny Evans a minute after the restart.
Manchester United started brightly during the opening 20 minutes, after controlling the possession and spending more time in City’s half for most of the time. Both Nani & Ashley Young pushed the City fullbacks into their own half, but United could not penetrate their defense which comprises of Micah Richards, Gael Clichy, Vincent Kompany & Joleon Lescott.
Despite United gaining an early momentum, City broke the deadlock after David Silva provided a pass to James Milner on the left side, who then picked a pass to the oncoming Mario Balotelli, who was just outside the penalty box & cooly slotted home the opening goal past David De Gea.
The match went back and fourth for the remainder of the first half with both goalkeepers having not much to do. United then signalled their intent for the second half by being on the field a few minutes earlier than their blue counterpart. That intent however, was quickly diminished after only a minute of the restart, United’s number 6, Jonny Evans was sent off for a last man tackle on Mario Balotelli.
It was all one way street from there on after Balotelli added his second after another assist from James Milner. That prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to ring in the changes by bringing on Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez & Phil Jones in place of Anderson & Nani. Those changes however seemed to not matter with Aguerro smashing home at point blank range with a goal almost identical to the second one, but this time with an assist by Micah Richards.
United did managed to steal a goal after a wonderful strike from Dareen Fletcher who left Joe Hart grasping on thin air. But that seems to only paper over the cracks of the United defense after a moment of madness which provided City with 3 further goals in stoppage time alone courtesy of a quickfire double from Edin Dzeko & a well deserved goal for the Spanish maestro, David Silva.
This has to be one of the most dreadful display by United in any game, let alone a Mancunian Derby. The only way to bounce back is to move on to the next game and rebuild the team’s confidence on the way to our 20th league title.
