Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25th year in charge of the Red Devils ended in a 1-0 win against United legend, Steve Bruce’s team. An own goal by another ex-United player, Wes Brown, secured all the three points against Sunderland.
Sir Alex made a host of changes after their midweek Champions League outing against Otelul Galati with Anders Lindergaard replacing David De Gea in goal & Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Darren Fletcher, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez all returning to the starting lineup.
As usual, United dominated in terms of possession throughout the game but was not as their attacking best on the day. Sunderland’s disciplined defense and compact play managed to overcome United’s attacking line. With Wayne Rooney once again starting in midfield for the Red Devils, there was not much clear cut chances compared to previous games.
United’s winner came after Nani’s shot was blocked from a tight angle. He took the resulting corner kick and was met by an unfortunate header by Wes Brown who was pressured by Danny Welbeck. The Red Devils went into half time with a slim 1-0 lead and was exposed time and time again by Sunderland.
They were lucky to avoid a penalty after the referee first awarded a penalty to Sunderland for a handball by Phil Jones, but after consulting his assistant, gave a free kick to United instead on a handball by Sunderland’s South Korean, Dong Won Ji.
The match saw United reclaim their 2nd spot after Newcastle’s earlier 2-1 win over Everton at St. James’ Park.
