Manchester United thumped Wigan 5-0 at Old Traffod to stay top with Manchester City, with only a goal difference separating the two sides.
United managed to field an entirely different back four, including the goalkeeper in the game against Wigan & still managed to keep a clean sheet. Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Jonny Evans & Patrice Evra performed their task admirably with Valencia bossing the right flank and even scoring a goal in the 75th minute to ensure United finish the year strongly.
An early goal by Park Ji Sung after an adventurous run by Evra opened the floodgates for the home team, albeit with a little bit of controversial decision by the referee who decided to send off Conor Sammon for allegedly ‘elbowing’ Michael Carrick in the face towards the end of the first half.
With the extra man, United never seemed to let the foot of the gas, with Dimitar Berbatov scoring a hat-trick, which also includes a cooly taken penalty in the 78th minute. Sir Alex Ferguson will surely continue rotating his team & utilising the depth of his squad in a bid to keep the team fresh for the upcoming games.
United have now won 5 games on the trot, while Anders Lindergaard again keeping a clean sheet. Any slip up from the blue half of Manchester will see the Red Devils pounce to ensure that they keep remaining on the top of the table come the end of the season.
